ANDY SANDBERG is a director, writer, actor, and Tony Award winning producer. He was recently appointed as the Artistic Director and Chief Executive Officer of the prestigious Hermitage Artist Retreat.


Sandberg has been represented Off-Broadway as the director of STRAIGHT, which was named a Critics’ Pick by The New York Times, citing that the production was “directed with polished finesse by Andy Sandberg.” He previously directed the critically acclaimed world premiere of APPLICATION PENDING, a comedy about kindergarten admissions that he co-authored with Greg Edwards (Westside Theatre; 2015 BroadwayWorld Award – Best Off-Broadway Play; Drama Desk Nomination – Outstanding Solo Show).  Last season, he directed the Off-Broadway premieres of Neurosis and Katie Thompson’s R.R.R.E.D., which rehearsed simultaneously and performed in repertory at the DR2 Theater.  He is currently represented in London as the director of SHIDA.


In the 2013-2014 season, Sandberg directed the world premieres of CRAVING FOR TRAVEL, also co-authored with Greg Edwards (Peter J. Sharp Theater @ Playwrights Horizons), and SHIDA, a new musical by Jeannette Bayardelle (Ars Nova; four AUDELCO Award Nominations, including Best Director and Best Musical; also at the American Repertory Theater in 2014; LA premiere in 2015; London premiere in 2019 - Off West End Award nominations for Best Director and Best Musical). In the 2012-2013 season, he directed the world premieres of THE LAST SMOKER IN AMERICA, an original musical by Tony nominee Bill Russell and Drama Desk nominee Peter Melnick (Westside Theatre), and Alan Brody’s OPERATION EPSILON (Four IRNE Awards, including Best Director, Best Play, and Best Ensemble; Three Elliot Norton Award Nominations).  Other upcoming directing projects include JAWBREAKER, a musical adaptation of Darren Stein’s 1999 cult film; MIRACLE, a new comedy by Dan Savage; NIGHT FOR DAY, a new play by Academy Award nominee Nicholas Kazan; IDENTITY, a new play by Nick Brown; and TOO CLOSE TO HOME, by Leigh Flayton.


Additional New York directing credits include ZELDA AT THE OASIS (St. Luke’s Theatre), BERNICE BOBS HER MULLET (NYMF), CITY OF ANGELS (BHT), INTO THE WOODS (BHT), A FUNNY THING...FORUM (BHT), "ELI'S COMIN' TO BROADWAY," a BC/EFA benefit hosted by Nathan Lane (Alice Tully Hall/Lincoln Center), and multiple Sing for Hope benefits featuring the talents of Dick Cavett, Michael Cerveris, and Richard Kind, among others.  In 2007, Sandberg assisted legendary director Hal Prince on the Broadway production of LOVEMUSIK (SDC Fellowship).


In 2009, Sandberg became the youngest producer in history to win a Tony Award. He has been represented on Broadway and London’s West End as a producer of the hit revival of HAIR (2009 Tony, Drama Desk, Drama League, Outer Critics Circle Awards); the Broadway revival of Gore Vidal’s THE BEST MAN, starring James Earl Jones, Angela Lansbury, John Larroquette, Candice Bergen, and Eric McCormack (2012 Tony, Drama Desk, Drama League, Outer Critics Circle Nominations), and Will Eno's critically acclaimed play THE REALISTIC JONESES, starring Toni Collette, Michael C. Hall, Tracy Letts, and Marisa Tomei. In the fall of 2009, Sandberg produced the New York premiere of VIGIL, starring Tony nominees Malcolm Gets and Helen Stenborg.  He was also represented Off-Broadway as the producer of A PERFECT FUTURE, a new play by David Hay.  In the summer of 2010, Sandberg produced the world premiere of PARADISE FOUND, a new musical co-directed by Hal Prince and Susan Stroman (Menier Chocolate Factory, London). He recently served as the executive producer for the hit Off-Broadway revival of PAGEANT (2015 Drama Desk Nomination – Best Revival of a Musical).


As an actor, Sandberg appeared opposite Golden Globe and Emmy nominee Lea Michele in the NYMF production of HOT AND SWEET.  Other favorite roles include Joey in SCARLETT FEVER, Huck in BIG RIVER, and Sam in FULLY COMMITTED. Film: THE LIVING (opposite Erin Cummings) and THE BATTLE OF PUSSY WILLOW CREEK.

B.A. English (Writing Concentration) and Theatre Studies at Yale University. While at Yale, Sandberg performed with and served as the business manager for the Whiffenpoofs, the nation's oldest and most renowned collegiate a-cappella group and also the Yale Alley Cats.  His more than thirty directing credits at Yale include SIDE SHOW, PARADE, THE LARAMIE PROJECT, SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD, MATT & BEN, THE LAST FIVE YEARS, THE GOAT OR WHO IS SYLVIA?, and multiple new works including Laura Jacqmin’s GREENHOUSE.


Sandberg is a proud member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (SDC), as well as Actors’ Equity Association (AEA) and the Off-Broadway League. He currently sits on the boards of The Browning School, the Yale Dramatic Association, and the Whiffenpoof Alumni Association. He is the President of both the Browning Alumni Association and the Yale Alley Cats Alumni Organization.
